Most problems with a hot tent setup come from parts that do not fit: a pipe that is too wide for the stove jack, or too short to clear the roof. Here is how to get it right the first time.
Step 1: start from the stove collar
The collar is the short tube on top of the stove where the pipe connects. Its diameter sets the pipe diameter. Many small tent stoves use pipes around 6 cm, but always check the stove's page or ask us before you buy a separate pipe.
Step 2: choose the pipe length
The pipe should rise straight up and top out at least 39 in (99 cm) above the point where it leaves the tent. Taller tents need longer pipes. That is why some of our stoves offer a choice of 2 m, 2.5 m or 3 m pipe, like the Titanium Tent Stove with Cooktop. A rolled titanium pipe can be cut to the length you need.
Step 3: check the stove jack
The stove jack is the fire-resistant panel where the pipe goes through the tent. Its opening has to be larger than the pipe, with a little room so the hot pipe never touches the fabric.
- Tent with a built-in jack: check the opening size against your pipe.
- Tent without a jack: sew or glue in a fiberglass stove jack and cut the hole to your pipe diameter.
- Do not want to cut your tent: a clip-on stove jack clamps through a door or window and takes chimneys up to 9 cm across.
Step 4: finish with a spark arrestor
A spark arrestor caps the top of the pipe and stops embers from landing on the roof. It has to match the pipe diameter. Ours fits 6 cm pipes: Stove Pipe Spark Arrestor.
The easy way
Our kits come with parts chosen to go together. If you already own a tent or a stove, email us its model and we will tell you what fits before you order.
